In this essay we explore the notion of essential dimension using the theory of valuations of fields. Given a field extension K/k and a valuation on K that is trivial on k, we prove that the rank of the valuation cannot exceed the transcendence degree trdeg K. We use this inequality to prove lower bounds on the essential dimension in some interesting situations. We study orbits of a torus action and find a formula for the essential dimension of the functor of these orbits.

A dilute atomic-molecular fermion in a trap acquires a rather complex layered spatial structure. At very low temperatures, typically at the center of the trap, a superfluid bosonic core is formed out of dimers, weakly bound pairs of fermionic atoms. Surrounding this core is a mantle, formed by a mixture of superfluid bosonic dimers and superfluid fermionic atoms. The outermost layer consists of only fermionic atoms, forming mostly a normal Fermi gas.

I describe the foundation of a Density Functional Theory approach to include pairing correlations, which was applied to a variety of systems ranging from dilute fermions, to neutron stars and finite nuclei. Ground state properties as well as properties of excited states and time-dependent phenomena can be achieved in this manner within a formalism based on microscopic input.

We show that within the framework of a simple local nuclear energy density functional (EDF), one can describe accurately the one-- and two--nucleon separation energies of semi--magic nuclei. While for the normal part of the EDF we use previously suggested parameterizations, for the superfluid part of the EDF we use the simplest possible local form compatible with known nuclear symmetries.
